Environmental policy
Huntswood provides people and processing services and solutions to regulated organisations, and as such is not a ‘product’ based supplier. Therefore, prevalent issues such as packaging use, ozone depleting substances or timber product use do not typically apply to Huntswood’s services, which is principally the supply of resource based solutions and services.
However, Huntswood is keen to ensure that we understand and effectively manage the potential and actual impact on the environment of our operating activities. As such, we comply with all applicable areas of legislation in areas where we carry out our business, in order to minimise the resulting impact on the environment.
Huntswood’s environmental and sustainability policy is underpinned by the following key principles:
- To comply with, and exceed where practicable, all applicable legislation, regulations and codes of practice
- To minimise the impact on sustainability of all office and transportation activities
- To promote recycling of all re-usable business materials
- To integrate sustainability considerations into all our business decisions
- To continually strive to improve our sustainability performance
These are achieved via the implementation and monitoring of the following practical measures:
- Walk, cycle and / or use public transport to attend meetings, site visits etc, apart from in exceptional circumstances where the alternatives are impractical and / or cost prohibitive
- Avoid physically travelling to meetings etc where alternatives are available and practical, such as using teleconferencing, video conferencing or web cams, and efficient planning of meetings to avoid unnecessary multiple trips
- Reduce the need for our staff to travel by supporting alternative working arrangements, including home working etc, and promote the use of public transport by locating our offices in easily accessible locations
- Remote Access (VPN) to support telecommuting
- Actively participate in the ‘bikes to work’ scheme
- ‘Car-pooling’ is encouraged among employees
- Power Management (software that saves energy by automatically turning off idle printers and computers, motion sensitive lighting etc.)
- Purified water is provided instead of plastic water bottles
- Blinds are routinely closed to reduce heat gain
- Aim to use resources efficiently and to minimise waste, usage of water, energy and other consumables in the office environment
- As far as possible arrange for the reuse or recycling of office waste, including paper, computer supplies and redundant equipment
- Company purchases are centralised to eliminate unnecessary purchases
Huntswood’s current approach to sustainability and environmental policies are based on the implementation of over-arching strategic principles, through practical day-to-day activities, which are designed to make a tangible difference.
Whilst targets and key performance indicators (KPIs) have currently not been established, all employees are empowered to identify opportunities for improvements (or instances of non-compliance) and escalate accordingly. As such, the policies are not static, but constantly evolving in an environment where continuous improvement is encouraged.
